The Christ Child

Who was he? Who is he? What did he come to do? What was so different about this child?

Questions, questions, questions. Sometimes we don’t ask enough of them especially concerning this child who was no ordinary child.

He had a unique beginning in that he didn’t have a human father and his mother had an angel speak to her about her coming pregnancy. She was well prepared. Most young Jewish girls would be waiting for their Messiah to come and would even think about being a vehicle of his conception. Years before this happening, the prophets foretold that a virgin would have a son and his name would be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace (see Isaiah 9:6) – what a lot to live up to! However, he did not disappoint!

The Christ child was a special child. He was one who grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favour was on him. (Luke 2:40) and even on the brink of his teenage years the Bible announces  he was obedient to his earthly parents. Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favour with God and all the people. (Luke 2:51-52) What child/teenager could you say this about? His unique qualities were to develop even more into his adult life when he trained as a carpenter under his step-father’s apprenticeship.

Christ is a word that means anointed one, Messiah. His father was actually Father God and Jesus (the Child) came to be anointed by him to be a fragrance of dynamic life in all its abundance on the earth – a copy of his Heavenly Father. How else would the human race recognise who he was. (e.g. If we wanted to communicate with ants we’d have to become an ant!)

Child– definitely with a capital ‘C’. There was no child like him. He was the Son of God and remains so as this child grew up to be the 33 year old who willingly gave his life for the sins of the people of the whole world of all generations. King of Kings and Lord of Lords are some of his many titles. It is said that Jesus Christ, the Childwas either completely mad or true to what he claimed to be and the evidence just in the changed lives of people who become Christians is proof enough that this Child is alive and well today having risen from the dead as an adult after his death.

How our children need to know all this. The One who was at creation moulding the Earth with His Father and The Holy Spirit is the same Child born to be King that we remember at Christmas. Let’s not let our children miss out on the real reason for the season!
